Data conversion is a general term, which also includes data migration, data transformation and transcoding. With volume of data moving to and fro in one single second over the web, it is not necessary that all this data is available in easily readable format. Much of data need to be converted into the format that can be read by individuals and companies. The whole idea running behind the data conversion is that data can be put into immediate practical usage.

Prior to taking into account the data conversion process, it is essential to keep into mind about the target audience; what is the need for data conversion, and will the converted data suffice the goals and objectives of the companies. For a successful data conversion to take place, it is necessary that one should have an in-depth knowledge about both the source as well as target formats. Where the file converter is not able to get hold of the file specification, the need for reverse engineering is required. As the result of reverse engineering the file can be converted to other readable formats with some errors and missing features. There have been many instances of picture conversions in which a one-way conversion is easier than the reverse process. For example, one can easily convert a true color image into grayscale, whereas, the reverse conversion is not an easy process altogether. Still in many of digital picture files, conversion leads to loss of data, which can hardly be restored.
