Speaking literally, Data Entry is the process of incorporating data in a kind of preset system or a layout. The data entered in these preset layouts or systems can take the form of ASCII text, written text, images, audio, video etc. Off late, with the advent of computerized data systems, the elementary definition of the phrase “Data Entry” has itself undergone a sea change. The term now holds in its ambit, data processing, data analysis, data digitization, data mining and much more.

Under the modern concept of data entry, the data from the hand written physical copies is entered into an automated program that makes the data present in a synchronized manner for the repository use. This also makes the data readily available for incorporating in any process. Not only this, the term “Data Entry” also includes copying figures, text etc. from one online data style sheet into another. This is primarily done to ensure flexibility and easy use of data in different formats.

Data Entry is carried out by typists who can handle huge amounts of data at any single point of time. Moreover, in the data conversion, computers convert the analog data into the digital format. This is primarily carried out by scanning the documents; and then converting them to recognizable digital format.  Today, there are numerous online data entry work happening. Many of the websites provide data entry operations under the work from home scheme, wherein the operators can work from their home facility, without affecting their regular job.

Data entry has become a full-fledged business today, with many of big corporate venturing into it. The business is generating quantum of employment to millions and adding to country’s economy.
